Total retail and food services sales increased 13 percent year over year (YOY) in January 2022 and 3.8 percent compared to December 2021.

While inflation contributed somewhat to the increased sales total, the retail increase exceeded analysts’ expectations. Despite consumer sentiment reaching its worst level in a decade—falling nearly 20 percent YOY—consumers remain active and willing to spend across most retail product categories.
